Sophie is really enjoying being back at school. She loves her new teacher, Wendy, and has already been assessed for her reading level and given at level 17 reader, as well as been promised multiplication worksheets up to 12x12.
She loved her birthday party last weekend, and her best friend Aiden coming for a sleepover this weekend. She already stayed the night at his house on 5 Jan.
She is now doing both cello and violin, and the cello seems to have improved her violin bowhold, rather than the expected. She has even stopped talking incessantly about the other instrument in each lesson, as she has got more used to the differences. In cello she is working fairly quickly through the first exercises in String Builder Book 1 and has just been given her first real tune, Hot Cross Buns. For the exercises, she is learning to read the bass clef, but when she has to play with fingers, her teacher has given her finger numbers to read. She is inclined to scan the whole piece briefly, and then memorise it, e.g. seeing there are 4 bars of 4 crochets and then playing 16 notes. In one of her early lessons, she was asked if her cello had a name. She now lovingly calls it "my giant gun", as she carries it places in its case, but I doubt she would admit that was a name.
